System76 Oryx Pro: The First Linux Laptop Shipping with the COSMIC Desktop

Linux hardware vendor System76 has announced a new Oryx Pro model, making it the first laptop to ship with the company’s new COSMIC desktop environment. The machine targets professionals and enthusiasts in engineering, machine learning, AI, and gaming with a suite of high-performance hardware.

System76 highlighted the laptop’s mission, stating it offers “the best combination of portability, performance, and quality visuals to help you engineer a brighter future. The Oryx Pro is back to supercharge your mission: more power, better display, and it will be the first laptop pre-loaded with the new Pop!_OS 24.04 LTS beta.”

Powering the Oryx Pro is an AMD Ryzen™ AI 9 HX 370 processor, which features 12 cores, 24 threads, a 5.1GHz boost clock, and 24MB of cache. The system pairs this CPU with an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 GPU equipped with 8GB of GDDR7 video memory. Users can configure the machine with up to 96GB of DDR5 5600 MHz RAM and up to 8TB of storage across two M.2 PCIe Gen4 slots. The laptop runs on an 80Wh 4-cell polymer battery and includes a 180W barrel charger.

The laptop features a 16-inch QHD+ matte display with a fluid 240Hz refresh rate and a 16:10 aspect ratio for expanded vertical workspace. For connectivity, the Oryx Pro includes Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.4, and Gigabit Ethernet. The port selection is extensive, offering two 40Gbps USB 4 Type-C ports that also support DisplayPort output, one USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A port, one USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A port, an HDMI port, and a Micro SD Card Reader.

The notebook ships with a beta of the Ubuntu-based Pop!_OS 24.04 LTS featuring the COSMIC desktop. Customers can also opt for a standard Ubuntu 24.04 LTS (Noble Numbat) installation instead. The new Oryx Pro is available now from System76’s online store, with configurations starting at $2,599.00 USD.
